The pigment

The Sacred Lotus – Nelumbo Nucefera – is revered in the Far East as a symbol of purity of heart and mind. In Japan, it has been used since the 9th century to create the vibrant, saturated hues of the “junihitoe”, the ceremonial dress reserved for women of the imperial court. In Korea, an herbal tea made from dried lotus leaves, called “Yeonkkotcha”, is drunk for its calming and detoxifying effects.
