The pigment

Cosmos – Cosmos Sulphureus – belongs to the composite family and is native to Latin America, where pre-Columbian civilizations have a long tradition of textile expertise. The Treatise on Dyeing Fabrics in Quito, dated 1703, reveals the use of this powerful, bright yellow-orange pigment for dyeing wool. In Venezuela, the flowers of the “chocolate” Cosmos variety are eaten in salads for their sweet taste and hepatoprotective medicinal properties.
